Flávio Bolsonaro says he will lead Brazil's opposition from the U.S.

Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil's presidential runoff to Lula, landed in Miami after leaving Brazil and says he will lead the opposition from the United States.

Posted Updated (2 d ago)

Flávio Bolsonaro, the Brazilian senator who lost Sunday's presidential runoff to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, says he will lead the opposition from the United States, according to the BBC. The BBC reports he called himself the "leader of Brazil." Fox News also reports he declared himself "leader." Al Jazeera reports he has vowed to continue his father's political fight in Brazil.

Bolsonaro and his family landed in Miami on Wednesday. The Guardian reports he left the airport under police escort and did not speak to reporters. Deutsche Welle reports he had refused to concede the election.

The Guardian says he vanished for over a day. Argentine migration authorities then said he had crossed into Argentina by land on Tuesday night. His Gulfstream IV jet, registered as LV-JQW, later left Guayaquil, Ecuador, for Miami, the Guardian says. The New York Times also says he left Brazil by way of Argentina.

Outlets differ on the passport order. The New York Times says police canceled his passport in connection with an investigation. Fox News says a Supreme Court justice ordered it seized minutes after Lula won. France 24 says the Supreme Court reportedly considered him a flight risk and ordered his passports seized. NPR says authorities ordered him to surrender his passport. NBC News says he refused.

The Hill, citing The Associated Press, says the State Department extended visas to him and his family. NBC News says the U.S. government will grant them entry visas. Deutsche Welle reports he faces money laundering allegations. NPR says he faces multiple investigations in Brazil. Al Jazeera reports that Brazilians are split over his departure.
