Harry Kane wins Ballon d'Or, first Englishman to do so in 25 years

Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday, and Alexia Putellas won the women's award for a third time.

Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday, October 26. He is the first Englishman to take the award since Michael Owen in 2001. Al Jazeera says it is Kane's first.

France 24 and Al Jazeera both describe his last season as record-breaking. France 24 says he scored 73 goals for club and country and broke scoring records at the World Cup, where he captained England to third place. NPR reports Kylian Mbappé finished second in the voting.

BBC News quotes Kane calling the win "a dream come true". France 24 describes his acceptance speech as emotional. Al Jazeera notes he was once mocked as the best-known player never to win a trophy.

Spain's Alexia Putellas won the women's award for the third time, according to NPR and France 24. France 24 says she helped Barcelona win the Champions League. Her win ends the three-year run of her teammate Aitana Bonmati.

NPR reports fans packed the streets outside the London Palladium and climbed light poles.
