Apple to replace iPhone Duos with cracked inner screens; hinge suspected

The Verge reports that the iPhone Duo's hinge could be what is cracking its inner screen. Apple has not said what causes the failures. Ars Technica also reports that the hinge is apparently damaging some screens.

Apple has acknowledged the problem. In a statement to Bloomberg and 9to5Mac, it said it knows of an inner-display issue affecting a "small number" of Duos. CNBC reports Apple said on Monday that it would replace affected devices under its AppleCare warranty. The BBC also reports that Apple will replace handsets with screen problems.

Owners began posting photos of the damage within hours of the launch last Friday, according to The Verge. Many photos show a crack or line in the middle of the screen above the hinge. The Verge says some show a bright line running from the center to the right side. CBS News reports the cracking is near the seam.

The Guardian reports that the posts appeared on Reddit and social media after the phone went on sale globally. It says experts think there are too few examples to tell whether the problem is wider. The Duo is Apple's first foldable phone and starts at $1,999 (£1,499).

The Verge also reports that iFixit has taken a Duo apart and given it a repairability score of 5 out of 10.

Separately, Apple has released iOS 27.2, The Verge reports. It adds Apple Pencil support to the Duo and an "Edge Light" feature meant to light up your face on video calls.
