33-year-old man detained after fire destroys Eagle's Nest in Bavaria

Police detained a 33-year-old German man after a fire burned down almost all of the Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler's former mountain retreat in Bavaria.

Police in Bavaria have detained a 33-year-old German man after a fire at the Kehlsteinhaus, the mountaintop retreat built for Adolf Hitler and known as the Eagle's Nest. BBC News reports the man's age and nationality. Fox News says he allegedly set the fire and showed signs of mental illness.

Police said the building burned down almost completely, according to CNBC. The local tourism authority told CNBC it was unclear whether any parts could be saved.

Al Jazeera says the fire broke out on Friday night and that no injuries were reported at the building. It quotes police as calling the detainee a "suspicious person." The Guardian says police announced the detention on Saturday.

BBC News and The Guardian say about 200 firefighters or emergency personnel were deployed. The site sits on the peak of Obersalzberg in a remote, hard-to-reach part of southern Germany, The Guardian reports. Deutsche Welle places it near the Austrian border. CBS News says police reported that local conditions hampered the firefighting.
