Nearly 2,000 Palestinians displaced in Hebron as Israeli operation continues

Israeli forces are taking over homes in Hebron after a Friday attack that killed two soldiers, displacing nearly 2,000 people by The Guardian's count, two days before Israel's election.

Posted Updated (7 d ago)

Israeli forces are displacing Palestinian families in Hebron as a military operation in the West Bank city continues. The Guardian reports nearly 2,000 people have been forced out as troops take over homes. Al Jazeera says thousands have fled, and that other Palestinians are taking in the displaced.

The operation follows a Friday attack on an Israeli military checkpoint. Two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers, according to NPR. CBS News reports three other soldiers were wounded. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a major military response.

The New York Times reports the military has demolished buildings and set up roadblocks in Hebron, the biggest city in the West Bank. Al Jazeera reports Israeli forces are turning homes into military posts, with evictions and raids continuing.

The Israeli military said all land crossings between Israel and the West Bank will close during Tuesday's election, according to Deutsche Welle. The BBC reports the Israel Defense Forces also announced limits on the movement of Palestinian workers before the vote.

The Guardian reports Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich made televised visits after the attack. It says their ruling coalition is narrowly trailing with two days of campaigning left. PBS NewsHour says the election is largely seen as a referendum on Netanyahu's leadership and security policies during three years of war.
