Supreme Court keeps block on Trump policy limiting trans inmates' care

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to let the Trump administration immediately enforce new restrictions on medical care for transgender people in federal prison. The decision leaves a lower-court block on the policy in place. The New York Times says the block stays for now.

CBS News reports the court acted in an unsigned order that rejected the administration's emergency appeal. The Hill reports that Justices Thomas and Alito dissented.

The Bureau of Prisons policy would prohibit gender-transition treatments, according to the Times. The Hill reports it would taper hormone treatments for inmates now receiving them and require officials to stop providing certain surgeries.

NPR reports the administration must keep providing gender-affirming care to federal inmates while litigation over the policy continues.

The Guardian says the ruling runs against the court's recent record in transgender rights cases, where it has largely sided with the administration.
