Rabbi says Israeli forces detained her at West Bank olive harvest with Brad Lander

Rabbi Jill Jacobs, an American human rights organizer, says Israeli forces detained her in the occupied West Bank while she observed and supported the Palestinian olive harvest, CBS News reports. CBS quotes her describing the action as "acting out Jewish values."

Jacobs was among about 80 U.S., Israeli and British volunteers detained on Wednesday, according to The Guardian and NPR. They were helping Palestinians harvest olives near Nahalin, close to Bethlehem. The Guardian says the group included several rabbis and Israel's former deputy attorney general. Fox News says Lander was with Rabbis for Peace volunteers.

Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for a Brooklyn congressional seat, was released after about three hours, The New York Times reports. Al Jazeera reports he said dozens of others were still in custody.

The Guardian reports the volunteers were taken to a police station. Lander posted on X from the bus that the IDF had detained him and a group of rabbis and volunteers. He wrote that they were harvesting olives in a grove. He said the occupation is a crime under international law and that harvesting olives is not a crime under any law he knows.

Al Jazeera reported later on Wednesday that Israeli settlers and the military are still blocking Palestinian farmers from reaching their groves. NBC News, The Guardian, The Hill and the Times name the Israeli military as the detaining force. NPR says Israeli security forces.
