Trump says he approves of Flávio Bolsonaro coming to the US after Brazil loss

President Trump said Tuesday he is fine with Flávio Bolsonaro entering the US, as reports say the defeated Brazilian candidate left for Florida and Lula called the departure "shameful."

Posted Updated (5 d ago)

President Trump said on Tuesday that he approves of Flávio Bolsonaro entering the United States after Bolsonaro lost Brazil's presidential runoff to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, The Hill reports. Trump spoke to reporters outside Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews. He said he thinks well of the Bolsonaros.

Fox News reported Monday that Bolsonaro, a senator, had reportedly gone to Florida two days after the vote. Al Jazeera reports that Lula criticized Bolsonaro for leaving Brazil, calling it "shameful," amid reports he was headed to the US.

Lula won a fourth term in the runoff on Sunday. The Guardian puts the result at 51.79% for Lula and 48.21% for Bolsonaro. Lula had lost the first round to Bolsonaro, according to the BBC and The Guardian.

CBS News, Deutsche Welle and PBS report that Bolsonaro has refused to concede. PBS reports that Trump called the outcome "rigged." Deutsche Welle reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other world leaders congratulated Lula.

The Guardian reports that a supreme court judge extended voting time by two hours. It says Lula's camp accused opponents of sabotaging public transport to keep voters away. PBS reports that transport and weather disruptions made the final stretch at the polls chaotic.
