Fox: Investigators say Omar's real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi; warrant stays sealed
Fox News reports federal investigators say Rep. Ilhan Omar's real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, as Trump says she could face jail or deportation and Obama calls the probe of her "appalling."
Fox News reports, citing sources, that federal investigators say Rep. Ilhan Omar's real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. It says U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro is moving to keep the warrant in the case sealed. No other outlet in this set confirms the name claim.
President Donald Trump said Omar could face jail in addition to deportation, Fox News reports. He called her "a disgrace." Al Jazeera reports he also called her "sick" and "dishonest" about a week after federal agents raided her home. Its headline says he used a vulgar word for Somalia.
The Hill describes the matter as a federal criminal investigation into accusations of immigration fraud. The BBC reports agents raided Omar's home the week before Obama spoke.
Former President Barack Obama criticized the investigation in a lengthy post on X. Fox News and NBC News both report he called the administration's actions "appalling." The BBC quotes him calling them "transparent efforts" to intimidate a Trump critic.
Fox News reports Obama accused federal officials of trying to strip Omar of her U.S. citizenship and deport her. He wrote that the government was coming down on a law-abiding elected official because she criticized the president. The Hill reports he accused the administration of targeting political opponents.
Fox News also reports conservative critics pushed back on Obama's statement, citing IRS scrutiny of Tea Party groups during his administration.
