Israeli police arrest 10 over West Bank settler attacks on journalist, diplomats

Israeli police say they arrested 10 suspects over settler attacks in the occupied West Bank. Al Jazeera reports that police released a video they say shows the arrests. The Guardian calls it a rare raid against settlers. CBS News reports the U.S. praised Israel for the arrests and that more attacks on Palestinians have been reported since.

Police did not identify the suspects or say what role each played, PBS NewsHour reports. The reports do not list charges.

The first attack came Friday. Masked settlers beat Palestinians harvesting olives, NPR reports. The Guardian says U.S. photojournalist Heidi Levine, who works for The Washington Post, was knocked down, kicked and beaten. It reports she broke four vertebrae and a rib, needed surgery on a finger and had cuts across her body. She called the attack an "attempted lynching." U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called it "vicious" and "cowardly" and asked for a full investigation, The Hill reports.

On Saturday, settlers attacked a convoy of European diplomats and beat a visiting French mayor, witnesses told France 24. France 24 also reports that Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of a brewing "crisis" in the territory.

The BBC reports that the Israeli military condemned the violence, while the prime minister's office said it was part of a "smear" campaign.

The New York Times says Israel had faced pressure, including from the U.S., to investigate. It adds that rights groups say most inquiries into extremist attacks on Palestinians go nowhere. Deutsche Welle reports that the Israeli group Yesh Din has recorded at least 170 settler attacks since Sept. 27. Al Jazeera reports that settler attacks during the olive harvest have already passed the 2025 total.
