Alberta base fire that killed four moved a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds, accounts say

A fast-moving fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta killed four service members and sent dozens to hospital, and the cause is still unknown.

Posted Updated (14 d ago)

A fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed four service members and injured dozens of others. The BBC reports that accounts suggest the flames covered about a kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds. It says the four dead were men.

France 24 reports that the fire started during military training on Saturday and that 39 people were hospitalised. It says Premier Danielle Smith said on Sunday that at least 19 patients were in critical condition. Some have severe burns and will need prolonged intensive care.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Sunday that four service members had died, according to NBC News. He called it one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada's armed forces on Canadian soil. The New York Times quotes him describing the fire as "violent, fast-moving."

Fox News reports that 62 mph winds fed the flames. PBS NewsHour says the wind carried the fire beyond the base into the surrounding rural area. The Guardian reported on Saturday night that it was spreading toward the nearby town.

Defence Minister David McGuinty first announced deaths and injuries at a press conference on Saturday night. CNBC reports he gave no casualty figures and no cause. Al Jazeera, which describes it as a grass fire, reports the cause is still unknown.
