Man who stopped Bend school gunman told his mother "I couldn't save them all"

A civilian who stopped the 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, called his mother afterward and said he couldn't save everyone; three children and a teacher died.

A civilian who stopped the gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, phoned his mother afterward and said, "I couldn't save them all," CBS News reports. CBS's report does not name him. Fox News says the man who took down the shooter is Kaylub Gianmarco, and describes him as a father.

Three children and a teacher were killed. BBC News reports police gave the children's ages as 5, 8 and 11. The Guardian says all three were boys and names the five-year-old as Rhoam Summer. His father told the Guardian the family is "broken and lost." The Guardian also reports that a seven-year-old and a 54-year-old are in hospital. It says the shooting took place on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the shooter was 16 and had attended the school before. Officials said Friday he was a former special needs student there. Police told PBS NewsHour he attacked a special education classroom and was killed at the scene. The Guardian reports a bystander shot him dead.

Fox News says police named the teacher on Friday as 25-year-old Meghan Lambert. The New York Times spells her first name Megan. It reports she graduated from high school in the district where she taught and died in a classroom with Rhoam and two other children. Her family called it her "dream job," the Times reports.

Deutsche Welle and France 24 report that police praised three people who stepped in and cut the attack short. NBC News reports Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said a teacher fought and tackled the suspect by throwing her cell phone at him. Police are still investigating the motive.
