Two more parks close roller coasters after fatal fall at Six Flags Georgia

Sea World Orlando and La Ronde in Montreal have closed rides after a man died falling from the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, bringing the number of halted coasters to 11.

Posted Updated (17 d ago)

Sea World Orlando in Florida and La Ronde in Montreal, Canada, have confirmed they temporarily closed roller coasters, PBS reports. That brings the total number of coasters halted to 11.

The closures follow a death on Monday afternoon at Six Flags Over Georgia. Police said one person died and several others were injured. NBC News reports officials said a man fell from the Goliath roller coaster. ABC News says he was ejected from the ride.

Witnesses told NBC News the man hit other passengers and landed beneath the coaster. One witness told NBC affiliate WXIA he hit the car three times. The Guardian reports officials have not confirmed how he died, how the others were hurt, or their conditions.

Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters at six parks in the U.S. and Canada, according to the Guardian, ABC News and NBC News. NBC says the company acted "out of an abundance of caution." An investigation is underway.

CNBC reported that Six Flags shares fell more than 10% in after-hours trading Monday.

CBS News reports the death has raised questions about ride safety. It says experts cite inconsistent safety standards and a so-called roller coaster loophole that limit federal oversight of amusement park rides. Fox News spoke with a personal injury attorney about possible liability as investigators examine the accident.
