Omar home search tied to immigration paperwork probe, Fox News reports

Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington home on Monday, and Fox News reports the probe concerns immigration papers her late father filed when she was a child.

Posted Updated (19 d ago)

Fox News reported that the search of Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington home followed a criminal fraud investigation into immigration paperwork her late father submitted when she was a child, according to France 24. The Justice Department has called the search part of an ongoing federal investigation. The reports do not quote it describing the subject.

Omar is a Minnesota Democrat and a critic of President Trump. Federal agents searched her home on Monday. CBS News says Department of Homeland Security agents carried it out. A BBC reporter at the scene saw several immigration agents carrying boxes from the house to a van.

A Guardian opinion column says a judge approved the search after a reportedly lengthy back and forth with federal officials. No news report provided here confirms that.

Omar said the search was an attempt to target political enemies, according to NBC News. Al Jazeera reports she said it was an attempt to "weaponise federal law enforcement." Her supporters accuse the Trump administration of abusing its power, NBC says.

CBS reports Democrats are pushing back and questioning the timing, less than three weeks before the midterm elections. Democratic strategist David Axelrod said the nature of the probe is unknown. He said it is highly unlikely to be so urgent that the government had to act publicly this close to the vote. PBS called the search an unusual step.

A Fox News headline says Vice President Vance issued a warning after the search. The available text does not say what he said.
