Trump names Stephen Miller chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles

President Trump said Friday that Susie Wiles is leaving as White House chief of staff and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller will take over on Monday.

Posted Updated (25 min ago)

President Trump announced Friday that Susie Wiles is leaving as White House chief of staff and Stephen Miller will replace her. The change takes effect Monday, according to The Guardian and BBC News. NBC News says Trump announced it in a social media post.

Miller is currently deputy chief of staff. The Hill quotes Trump calling him "one of my most trusted advisors." Al Jazeera says Miller has been a close confidant of Trump since 2016.

Miller is widely described as the architect of the administration's hard-line immigration policy. NBC News says he has also served as a homeland security adviser and played a central role in deportation policy. France 24 says he drew particular criticism after ICE agents shot and killed two Minneapolis protesters in January.

PBS reports Wiles is Trump's longest-serving chief of staff. PBS and The Guardian say she is the first woman to hold the job.

The announcement came days after the midterm elections. CNBC says Democrats won majority control of the House and Senate, and puts the announcement three days after the vote. Deutsche Welle and NPR also cite Republican losses.
