Mike Ditka, the Chicago Bears coach who won a Super Bowl as both a player and a coach, has died at 86. His family announced the death on Friday.

In a statement, the family called him their "beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend." They said the world knew him as a Hall of Fame player, coach and leader of the Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, but to them he was "the heart of our family." The Guardian published the statement.

NBC News says he led the Bears to their only Super Bowl victory, in 1986. The Guardian describes the team as the 1985 Bears. ABC News calls him an NFL Hall of Famer.

Fox News reports that Jarret Payton, son of Bears running back Walter Payton, posted the family's statement on X. The New York Times says Ditka later became one of the sport's most visible television analysts.

The reports do not give a cause or place of death.
