Stevens defends Rogers endorsement; Trump cites it at Iowa rally

Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate race two days before the election, and defended the decision on CNN.

Posted Updated (1 hr ago)

Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens defended her endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat in what The Hill calls a tense CNN interview with Anderson Cooper on Sunday. She passed over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who beat her in the primary. Election day is Tuesday.

The Hill reports Stevens told Rep. Debbie Dingell by phone Saturday night that she supported El-Sayed. NPR reports she was scheduled to attend a unity event with him and endorsed Rogers instead. NBC News reports she pulled her earlier endorsement of El-Sayed. ABC News says the two have feuded publicly over a campaign ad Stevens said was anti-Semitic.

President Trump praised Stevens at a campaign event in Iowa on Sunday, The Guardian reports. He repeatedly called El-Sayed a "jihadist." The Guardian describes the remarks as racist. It calls the Michigan race neck and neck and says it will weigh heavily in deciding Senate control.

Al Jazeera reports El-Sayed dismissed Stevens' backing of Rogers. CBS News reports Democrats are furious with her. Fox News reports Hasan Piker, Mehdi Hasan and others attacked her on X. Politico calls the endorsement a blow to El-Sayed in the campaign's final days. France 24 says it exposed divisions in the party as control of Congress hangs in the balance.
