Justice Department seeks to isolate some Alaska ballots in Peltola probe

The Justice Department asked a court in a Friday filing to isolate some Alaska ballots as part of a criminal probe into whether Mary Peltola's campaign helped recruit a second Dan Sullivan to the Senate race.

The Justice Department has pushed to isolate some Alaska ballots as part of a criminal investigation into the state's Senate race, according to a Friday court filing, The Hill and NPR report. The probe examines whether having two candidates with the same name could confuse voters.

The investigation centers on reporting by The New York Times that Democrat Mary Peltola's campaign and national Democrats helped recruit a spoiler candidate, Dan J. Sullivan. He shares a name with Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, according to the BBC. Republicans and Sullivan's allies say the recruitment was meant to confuse voters.

NBC News reports the FBI is sending more agents to Alaska for the investigation. PBS NewsHour reports the department also filed a list of proposed questions it wants the court to force the Peltola campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to answer. The Guardian reports prosecutors issued new grand jury subpoenas this week. CBS News reports the top Justice Department attorney in Alaska called the allegations "troubling."

Alaska's governor has separately ordered a criminal investigation into the Peltola campaign, according to the Times and CNBC. The Times says President Trump attacked Peltola but did not say what crime may have been committed.

Peltola denies any role. Speaking in Juneau on Thursday, she said she knew nothing about any other candidate on the ballot besides herself and the incumbent. She also said, "I am not interested in tricking voters." Fox News reports she called the Times report a "distraction" on Wednesday. Her campaign group, Alaskans for Mary, told ABC News it "has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign."

CNBC says the race could help decide which party controls the Senate.
